Il Guercino, nickname was never more wrong, is among the painters of the seventeenth century, the Baroque Age, one of the leaders of this century that extolled the maximum values of the senses: from painting to music. Guercino, alias Giovanni Francesco Barbieri (Cento Ferrara, 1591 - Bologna, 1666), like Guido Reni, Lanfranco and Domenichino, is among the leading exponents of the "Scuola Bolognese" conceived as the axis of the renewal of contemporary painting from time impantanatasi stagnant swamp in imitation of the style of Michelangelo and Raphael, pure models now emptied of all content.
On the one hand the phenomenon and dramatic chiaroscuro of Caravaggio painting of the second Nature, the other as Painting Idea of Ludovico, Agostino, and above all, Annibale Carracci and his disciples, to give to the Baroque, the new "facies" .
Il Guercino is among those moved by the chiaroscuro of the great Ferrarese Dosso Dossi, mold you into forms and colors with which selected by fellow countryman Pope Gregory XV, 1621 to 1623, when the pope dies, the soul altars Guercino and wall surfaces of Rome, the famous Casino Boncompagni Ludovisi, known as the Aurora "from the picture that the artist performs in competition perfect with the same subject by Reni fresco in Palazzo Rospigliosi.
The Mars found, however, relevant to a more mature phase, remaining in his studio in Bologna until the end.
Nevertheless, the message is imprinted by Guercino in complete perfection.
The big armed figure of the god of war, against a background of sky obscured by the smoke of powder exploded.
However, the powerful body, enhanced by the luster of the breast and thighs of steel, is moving dynamically into an invisible Venus. So that the background of an ideal Castel Sant'Angelo a Cupid strives to destroy a cannon, a weapon of war and death to be banished.
